It’s no secret that I HEART Breakfast.  If I had it my way, I’d eat pancakes for dinner with a side of super crisp bacon, all drenched in maple syrup.  OH MY.  I am drooling on my keyboard.

Naturally, when I discovered MONKI Breakfastclub & Bistro, I knew I had to try it.  How can you resist when it’s called a breakfast club?  It sounds so cool and a bit elite, but not in a snobbish way.  Like, you instantly become awesome as soon as you claim that you’ve tried their food.

I first noticed Monki after a trip to the Korean grocery store.  It’s right across the street and used to be a bistro called Petite, which has since moved to a larger location on 17th Avenue.  I was instantly intrigued.  A breakfast place?  Only a few blocks from where I live?  I HAVE STRUCK GOLD.

So, we ventured over to Monki on a Saturday morning, just a very short walk from our apartment.  This is one of the perks of living downtown, although I have to deal with screaming drunk girls on weekends (why do drunk girls scream so much?).  But I digress.  When we arrived at about 10:30am, about half of the tables were occupied, so we easily got a table by the window.  It’s a good thing we got there when we did because the place started to fill up shortly after our arrival.

The space is small (the type of place that would fill up in an instant), but it’s accented nicely with a few colourful touches.  It’s simple and modern without trying to be overly stylistic.  I like it.

I chose a Frittata – sun-dried cherry tomatoes, spicy Italian sausage, and white gold burrata.  It came with a side of hash browns and a dish of fresh fruit.  First, the presentation is beautiful.  I love that it all came on a wood board.  Secondly, it all tasted as good as it looks.  The eggs were fluffy, the sun-dried cherry tomatoes added a nice acidity and richness to the dish, the chunks of spicy Italian sausage added a good touch of saltiness, all perfectly rounded out with the white gold burrata that had simply melted into the egg.  Mmmmm.  The combination worked so well!  Top that off with the crisp yet soft, well-seasoned potatoes, it’s a very hearty breakfast dish.  All the fruit in the bowl was delicious as well – sweet and fresh, a nice balance to the richness of the frittata.  I found the portion to be quite large, so I ended up taking some of it to go.

Mark went with the the brisket hash with fried eggs and hollandaise.  Does that delicious or what?!  He was very happy with this choice.  I had a bite of the brisket hash and it was melt-in-your-mouth goodness.  Yum!  Definitely a hearty, filling breakfast.

In the end, we both agreed that this would be our new breakfast spot.  The food reminded us of our favourite breakfast place in Vancouver, Medina Cafe, which I think is a very high compliment given that Medina Cafe is really epic.  The price point is a bit high to come here often, but it’s well worth it for a nice treat on a weekend morning.  I’m so glad that Monki opened so close to us.  We can literally roll out of bed and have ourselves a hearty, filling breakfast – no need to go to Vancouver anymore! (just kidding, I would never not go to Vancouver, I mean, come on now…)
